Can you check blood pressure without a cuff?


Not in the way you are hoping. There is no pulse trick, finger method or phone-only app that produces a number your doctor will use, and the American Heart Association reports that validation studies for most smartphone-based measurement techniques have not been conducted, and that mobile health monitors have shown poor accuracy against ordinary cuff readings. What a phone can honestly do is estimate between cuff readings, once it has been calibrated against your own cuff.

What does not work

Feeling your pulse at the wrist or the neck tells you how fast your heart is beating. It says nothing about the force of the blood against your artery walls, which is what blood pressure is. Counting beats gives you a pulse, not a reading.

The standard site for a measurement is the upper arm, as the AHA statement says, with a cuff that compresses the artery. Every method that skips that step is estimating rather than measuring.

What the research says about phone apps

The AHA’s measurement statement is unusually blunt for a scientific document: most smartphone-based techniques have not been through validation studies, and the ones tested have measured poorly compared with oscillometric readings. That statement is from 2019 and remains the association’s standing guidance on how blood pressure is measured.

So a page or an app that claims your phone alone reads your blood pressure is claiming more than the evidence supports. If a number arrives without a cuff and without a calibration step, treat it as a curiosity.

Wrist and finger devices

These do use a cuff, just in the wrong place. Validated wrist devices exist, but the AHA statement describes the practical difficulty: the sensor has to sit directly over the artery, and in clinical practice these devices have many challenges in obtaining an accurate measurement. The AHA’s home monitoring page is shorter about it: wrist and finger monitors are not recommended because they give less reliable readings.

What a calibrated camera estimate is

If you have no cuff at all today

Get it checked by someone who has one. The NHS points people to a pharmacy or a GP surgery, and many UK pharmacies check for free from the age of 40; elsewhere the pharmacy option varies by country. Then buy the cuff. An automatic upper-arm monitor costs about as much as a few takeaway coffees and it earns that back in the first week, because a week of readings is what the next step needs.

What your doctor will ask for

Two things, and neither of them comes from a phone alone. NICE NG136 confirms hypertension when a clinic reading of 140/90 or higher meets a home average of 135/85 or higher. That means a reading taken by a professional and a week of your own, averaged.
